Brandy Williams' Journal

30th June, 2008. 9:04 pm. Gone for a while, back now

I'm working on setting up a WordPress blog on my home page with an RSS feed to this one. Non-trivial for me and I haven't pulled it off yet. I chip away at this project between editing vacation movies. This one isn't a vacation flik but film from yesterday's summer solstice celebration at the Shinto shrine in Granite Falls.

(It's back:)

Current mood: relaxed.

18th June, 2008. 2:50 pm. Captain Uhura!

Thanks to [info]phoenixw for pointing me to this. Star Trek: Of Gods and Men is an independent studio production, directed by Tim Russ (Tuvok), featuring some series stars, including Nichelle Nichols, my all-time favorite trek actor. Christmas for trek fans!

Current mood: chipper.

17th June, 2008. 1:11 pm. The best revenge, get even

Ellen Goodman to Hillary supporters.

Women's Media Center report: Sexism Sells, But We're Not Buying It. For those of you who were looking for the sexist comments during this campaign. It's hard to take, I only got halfway through it.

Current mood: distressed.

15th June, 2008. 2:13 pm. Weekend

Saturday: take work related workshop in portfolio management.
Saturday night: Indiana Jones movie with [info]alexwilliams. We went to the first movie on our first date 27 years ago. Same date. Same movie, and the star/character has aged just like we have. Except we beat Indy in the faithful category.
Sunday: got some writing-related work done.
Now: I say to [info]tedgill, "how about I put you in the car and drive us to the park?" Ted: "Woo hoo! But I will need some lunch." Me: "I have packed a picnic basket." Ted, cautiously: "What kind of picnic?" "Sausage, cheese, sun chips, cucumber chips, and hard boiled eggs." This passed muster. See the world tomorrow.

Current mood: happy.

13th June, 2008. 12:48 pm. Sexism in the workplace

Harriet Rubin in Conde Nast's Portfolio.com

"Twenty or 30 years ago, people thought it could actually work like that: Deal with sexism and be done with it. But sexism didn't end. Now we dread having to bring it up again. Why? Maybe because our failure stirs up fear and embarrassment at the idea that it will never go away. These thoughts are always with us but never more so than today, thanks to Senator Hillary Clinton's tumultuous presidential campaign. She was the "inevitable" Democratic candidate—until she wasn't. Once there was a charismatic male contender, we as a nation had to once again face our true feelings about gender and power."

Current mood: frustrated.

12th June, 2008. 10:24 pm. Books and photos

[info]tedgill found my second bookPractical Magic for Beginners in Barnes and Noble tonight, fourth printing. Woot!

Looking for a photo gallery maker for [info]alexwilliams I found Shozam. This neat little program resides on your box, creates galleries on your box, and uploads to your web host. Price between $30 (simple home user) and $500 (hefty business.) Dead easy to use.

I immediately employed the program to expand my photos of Egypt, 2005. Shimmy shimmy shimmy shi-ee-ine, meesy meece!

Current mood: chipper.
Current music: Tammys: Egyptian Shumba.

11th June, 2008. 12:06 pm. Web pages

I'm a do-it-yourself web creator. I've had a home page for ten years now - I was an early adopter. What I want from a home page:

*Advertise speaking events
*Advertise books
*Host creative output - writing, music, photos

I also want to own this output. I don't want to use a social networking site to organize this material, I want it to reside on my home computer to be uploaded to a server/domain hosting service.

I don't have the time/skill that a professional does so I haven't ever buckled down to learn, say, Dreamweaver. I'm still coding CSS in Wordpad using Dover Books clip art.

My question is: what software are people out there using? Is there a software package that will help me create a photo gallery, host music, and maybe even host video, and upload this to a host service? This seems to me to be a niche that needs filling.

Current mood: working.

9th June, 2008. 1:09 am. Sunday night update

Today our marvelous priest/deacon team [info]tedgill and [info]sebastian_lvx brought two more stars in the body of Nuit into relationship with the EGC community. Lovely job by everyone.

Tonight I flew into San Francisco. Slid the rental car into the tight lanes of the aging freeways and soared across the Golden Gate bridge under a quarter moon. Found "Rocket Man" on the radio and rode the roller coaster Marin County hills through some of the country's most amazing scenery, in the dark. Staggered into my Rohnert Park hotel, a Doubletree done up like a mission, splashed adobe orange. This is the report that I made it safely. Dead tired which is when the poetry usually comes out. Home again tomorrow.

Current mood: exhausted.
